How I cured my xanthelasma
I can still see the one on my left eye but it is now significantly smaller and flatter, I’ll have to treat it again but will try banana peels. My right eye is pretty much gone but I’ll have to see how it heals.

This morning I took off the plasters and I won’t be putting them back on except maybe at night…I haven’t yet decided.
I have now switched to vitamin E oil and will continue to keep the area moist with this until the wound is healed completely. I also read somewhere that applying Vitamin E oil helps the xanth to not spread to other areas (I wish I could find where I saw this but it was ages ago that I read it).
Very promising as I feel like a human being again and am not afraid to go outside without sunglasses! Swelling still needs to go down a bit more, I’ve stopped icing it but I will do so again later. That’s all for now!

I am still using honey and keeping it covered throughout the day and night. It’s still quite swollen but there’s definite improvement.

On the morning of day 5, I did not look my best but it finally looked like the fat/cholesterol deposit underneath my skin was finally being unearthed and I was thrilled.
I never thought that I would be happy to see this disgusting crap on my eye but hey, never say never….
The following pics are the worst of the bunch so brace yourself.
It started out like this;

Then I took a shower and washed it with the running warm water and gently with a bit of soap and when I got out of the shower, the skin had broken and the fat was released!

I went back into the bathroom and turned on some warm water and GENTLY kept washing/pressing the water on the wounds until it all released.
The result?

Now here is where I wanted to stop. Although I saw that there was more underneath I was not willing to do anymore garlic treatments for fear of scarring.
I put honey on that bad boy, covered it up with a plaster, cooled it down with plastic balls and just chilled.
But then I had a thought, what about the banana peels??? That might be a gentler way to get out the rest right? RIGHT?
So that night, I cut out a piece of banana peels, taped in onto my eyelids and hoped for the best.
I’m just gonna hit you up with some pics, I took a few throughout that day, the first two in the morning and then the last two with some garlic bits on. The scab has really formed here by morning, I’m keeping up with keeping them cool with my little balls also remember the vaseline is very important!

I woke up to this. As you can see the treated area is look like a bruise now but it’s actually a scab starting to form.
Scab formation is a good sign as it shows you that the treatment is having an effect but you must keep them moist!!! If it becomes hard and comes off from you picking at them it might leave you with a scar.
While we are on this topic I would like to share a tidbit of information on wounds in general. Wounds should remain covered at all times. They do not need to breathe, they do not need to be left alone with a scab, it is better to keep it moist and covered until it goes away. Scabs give you scars. Look it up, it’s true!
Also, instead of using antibacterial ointments I use pure, organic honey. Not the processed kind in grocery stores, look at the ingredients and if it says anything another other than pure honey then honey, you need to keep looking.
I now do this for all of my minor wounds, slap on some honey or vaseline, cover it with a plaster (band-aid) and wait it out. I clean the would and switch plasters daily.
Xanthelasma is a it’s own beast but once the wound got going this is what I did.
But we haven’t gotten there quite yet.
On this day I also did two treatments, as mentioned previously, with the balls and meditation during treatment, used vaseline and went to sleep.
Would you give up at this point? You can’t leave the house without sunglasses and it doesn’t really look like it’s getting any better but you must hang in there kids!
Sunday night I did the following;
Expect it to burn, if it doesn’t burn the you’ve got the wrong garlic, organic is best but I used regular local garlic (not imported as it is fresher). My eyes watered quite a bit during the time I held it in place and hurt quite a bit.
Another tip is to surround the xanth spots with petroleum jelly (vaseline) before applying the garlic so that the healthy skin won’t get burned.
I then went to sleep and awoke to the below pics.

My xanth spots are close to the corner of my lids as you can see where most of the swelling is.
There is zero improvement after the first treatment which is why people get deterred as it has not punctured the xanths it just made me look like I’ve been punched in the face.
First thing I did that morning was take my little plastic balls to ease the swelling which it did.
I also did something that I have not read up on. I figured the swelling is due to an allergic reaction and I had some antihistamine tablets kicking around so I took one.
The swelling went down, the xanth did not look any better.

I took another antihistamine later that day. I also did another treatment that morning and that night.
I varied the treatment a little. Instead of using a cotton bud, I took a cotton pad and cut it up in the shape/size of my xanth. I used medical tape to hold it in place.
Those 10-15min can seem like the longest minutes of your life so I put on a guided meditation video from youtube that was exactly 15 min, laid down and breathed my way through it.
This treatment was MUCH better than the first due to the cooling sensation and my concentrating on something else. Plus meditation is always good for you 🙂
What are these plastic balls you ask? I bought them at a local shop, they are used as an alternative to ice to keep your drink cold and not water it down. The benefit of using these instead of covered ice is that it doesn’t melt and therefore doesn’t wet your eyelids. Also they don’t feel quite as cold as regular ice. I highly recommend them! If you can’t find them then just dab ice covered with a paper towel, don’t hold it in place for longer than a few seconds at a time.

That whole day I ensured to put vaseline on and after the second treatment that day (total of 3 now) I went to sleep.
At first I tried the non-so abrasive routes and I went back and forth for a while.
Banana peels appealed to me (no pun intended) because it was easy to get and seemed quite harmless. I mean how much harm can a banana really do?
I’m lazy and non-committal so to be fair, I didn’t follow the regimen. I was told to place the peel on my eyelids and leave overnight for several nights until it goes away. I didn’t do this, I just repeatedly rubbed the peel on my lids every once in a while at night while watching series. I can report that the xanth got flatter and the effects were temporary after a few days or weeks they went back to puffy and didn’t really dissolve it.
I did go back to this option every once in a while but again, I didn’t put it on overnight and I wasn’t committed to it.
Apple Cider Vinegar was another option but I read that you need to tape it to your eyes for 2 hours at a time and…well I wasn’t committed to it. I think I did that once for maybe half an hour and it burned a bit, it also burned my skin a bit but no real difference in the xanth. Again, looking back it was promising but I figured if I’m going to burn it off I might as well do it with the garlic.
Castor Oil also seemed quite harmless and I tried it on an off for a few days but it seemed to actually make it worse. I slathered it on at night and when I woke up by xanth was more swollen and looked like it got bigger. I tried this option here and there over a period of months, never with good results (although I’ve read that it works for others)
The Garlic option is most popular and most talked about and the testimonials I read were very promising. About 6 months ago I tried it, but got scared and backed out when my lids looked too swollen and raw, I thought I had gotten the worst of it when it started to scab and it was better for a while but it wasn’t gone. Many people freak out after a day or two and stop, this seems to be common first reaction to this type of treatment. Especially since you are not going by any real guidelines as to exactly how it should be done, for how long and what it should look like at each stage. There is no pamphlet and no doctor’s advice.
I saw one blog post and this brave woman went full force. One pic showed an hole in her eye and she still put more garlic in it. I was not willing to go as far as she did but I do not judge as these xanths really take a toll on your self confidence and the knowledge that it will gradually grow and get worse is a really frightening prospect! In the end, her last pic did show that it was gone with a minor scar and she was quite happy with it.
Looking back I realize that I should have kept going, not to the extent of the the blog that I referred to but maybe just another treatment or two.
Which brings us to present day….or at least one week ago today, when I really had enough and bought some garlic, took a deep breath and….here we go.
About a year ago I noticed a little discolouration on my eye. At first I thought it was a dry spot as my eyelids have always been sensitive so I tried different eye creams and moisturizers but it wouldn’t budge so I went to my local GP to see what it was. One quick look and she said Xanthelasma. I asked what I can do about it and she wrote it down for me and said “look it up on the internet.”
Needless to say I wasn’t very pleased with this answer so I went to a dermatologist who confirmed it. She said they are cholesterol deposits in my eye that actually have nothing to do with the cholesterol levels in my body. I asked if there was a cream or something that would get rid of it and she said NO, and somewhat offhandedly said that I could go see a plastic surgeon. She wasn’t exactly the most helpful or sympathetic doctor I’ve ever met.
I got home, pulled out the little piece of paper that the GP wrote down for me and started searching. The pictures horrified me because these bad boys GROW and SPREAD and it was anything but pretty.
What’s worse, it seemed the cure options were quite limited. Going on plastic surgeons sites gave me little hope as even they advised that it often reoccurs and there wasn’t even a proper treatment for it. Lasers or surgery leave scars, horrid pics showed stitches and of course, the prices were very high and not really something I can afford, especially if it reoccurs.
Was I destined to have my eyes covers in what looked like skin tags or scars or skin tags on top of scars??
I also found that many others used TCA successfully but I’m really not keen on putting ACID ON MY EYELIDS. I’m clumsy on a good day and my eyesight is rather important to me. My hats off to the brave souls who have used this option and were happy with the results although most said that it did reoccur.
I decided to look up homeopathic remedies instead and found this much easier to swallow.
If you are reading this, I’m sure you have also been through the above and are now looking for answers.
The top home remedies that kept coming up over and over are;
Garlic
Castor Oil
Banana Peels
There are several more but these are the one’s I tried in the past year but not before reading numerous testimonials, mostly from this site here: https://dreamama.wordpress.com/tag/xanthelasma/
The blog was super helpful mostly because of the hundreds of comments from fellow sufferers but the blog is several years old now and I thought I’d make a new one using my experience.
Before I do I need to say that I am by no means a medical expert, not in traditional/western medicine or homeopathic remedies, I’m just a regular person sharing my experience and pics in the hope that it might help others.
Thanks for joining me!
